Again and again you find out that all people in a company talk about innovations and you have the strange feeling that somehow they all talk past each other and there are big friction losses. The main reason is often and simply a lack of common definition of the word innovation. The recommendation is to use the Wheelspin Checkup to check whether there is a common definition of innovation in the team or not.

If this is not the case, a common definition must be worked out, published consistently and visibly in the company and perhaps checked once a year to see whether it still fits in with the current framework conditions of the organisation.

The example shown in the figure is our favorite and our recommendation because it combines five very important aspects in one definition:

1. innovations are implemented ideas
2. innovations are only innovations if they revolutionise markets
3. innovations solve problems and thus bring added value
4.innovations are for our customers and therefore human-centered
5. innovations or we as idea finder are one step ahead of our customers.

So if there is a common definition, there is clarity, and if there is clarity, there is innovation. The position of the status quo only changes when everyone pulls in one direction.
